The basics

What Florida actually requires

Florida is a no-fault state, which changes what your policy is for. After most accidents your own insurance pays your medical bills first, regardless of who caused the crash. That is why the state minimum is built the way it is.

To register a car in Florida you must carry:

  • $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) — your own medical costs and lost wages after an accident, no matter who was at fault.
  • $10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL) — damage you cause to somebody else's car or property.

That is the whole legal requirement, and it is the part most people misunderstand: Florida does not require Bodily Injury Liability for most drivers. So a policy that is perfectly legal can still leave you paying out of pocket if you seriously injure someone. Two situations change that — a DUI conviction, or certain at-fault accidents — after which the state requires you to file proof of higher limits.

Where the minimum stops protecting you

$10,000 of property damage does not go far against a late-model vehicle. And PIP covers 80% of medical expenses up to that $10,000 cap, which a single emergency room visit can reach.

The coverages worth discussing before you decide:

  • Bodily Injury Liability (BI) — pays for injuries you cause to other people. Not required for most Florida drivers, and the single most important thing to add.
  • Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist (UM) — Florida has one of the highest rates of uninsured drivers in the country. This is what covers you when the person who hit you has nothing.
  • Collision — repairs to your own car after an accident, whoever caused it.
  • Comprehensive — theft, vandalism, falling debris, and flood or hurricane damage to your vehicle. In South Florida this is not optional in practice.
  • Rental reimbursement and roadside assistance — small add-ons that matter on the day you need them.

What changes your price

Two drivers on the same street can pay very different premiums. These are the factors that move the number most, and the ones we work with when we shop your policy:

Things you cannot change today

  • Your ZIP code. Rates vary county by county and street by street across Florida — claim frequency, theft rates and traffic density are all local.
  • Driving record. Tickets and at-fault accidents typically affect your rate for three to five years.
  • The vehicle. Repair cost and theft rate matter more than sticker price.

Things we can act on

  • Deductible. Raising it lowers the premium — but only take that trade if you could actually pay it tomorrow.
  • Paying in full or semi-annually instead of monthly usually removes installment fees.
  • Bundling your auto policy with home insurance or a commercial policy.
  • Discounts you may already qualify for — defensive driving course, good student, telematics, transponder, multi-car.

If you already have a policy, bring your current declarations page. Comparing coverage against coverage is the only way to know whether a lower quote is actually a better deal.

Questions

Auto insurance in Florida, answered

Do I need SR-22 insurance in Florida?

Only if the state tells you to. An SR-22 is not a policy — it is a form your insurance company files with the Florida DHSMV proving you carry the required coverage. It is usually required after driving without insurance, an at-fault accident while uninsured, or too many points on your license.

After a DUI conviction Florida requires an FR-44 instead, which demands substantially higher liability limits than a standard policy. We handle both filings.

How long do I have to carry an SR-22?

Typically three years from the date of the requirement, and it has to stay continuous. If the policy lapses, the insurer notifies the state and your license can be suspended again — which is the part that catches people out. We set these policies up so a missed payment does not quietly undo three years of compliance.

Does my auto insurance cover hurricane or flood damage?

Only if you carry comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive is what pays for a flooded engine, a tree limb through the windshield or storm debris damage. Liability-only and collision do not cover any of it. In South Florida we recommend comprehensive on almost any vehicle still worth repairing.

I was hit by a driver with no insurance. What now?

Your PIP pays your medical costs first, because Florida is a no-fault state. For the damage to your car and for injuries beyond the PIP cap, what matters is whether you carry Uninsured Motorist coverage. If you do not, recovering anything usually means going after the other driver personally, which rarely works. Given how many uninsured drivers are on the road in Florida, UM is one of the cheapest pieces of real protection you can buy.

Can I get covered with a bad driving record?

Yes. High-risk profiles are a normal part of what we do — tickets, at-fault accidents, lapses in coverage, SR-22 and FR-44 filings, and drivers new to the country. Some carriers price these situations far better than others, which is exactly the kind of difference an independent agency is for. Send us your information and we will tell you honestly what your options look like.

How fast can I get proof of insurance?

Usually the same day. Once we have your information and the policy is bound, we can send your ID cards by email so you can register the vehicle or satisfy a lienholder without waiting for anything in the mail. Call (305) 640-1209 if you need it today.
